The origins of Okinawan karate and kobujutsu are still shrouded in mystery. 空Kara means empty; 手Te(ti) means hand, thus “Karate” means “the empty hand”. Shuri-Te, Naha-Te, Tomari-Te are the three styles of Te (Hands) that Karate descended from.
空 手 [Kara te] is the Japanese pronunciation and [kara ti] is the Ryukyu language pronunciation.
It’s changing between vowels in Japanese (e) to (i) in Ryukyu language.

Meibukan (明武館), Okinawa Goju-Ryu(沖縄剛柔流), Meitoku Yagi(八木明徳) , Meitatsu Yagi, Meitetsu Yagi.
Meitatsu is doing SEIENCHIN and Meitetsu is doing SEIPAI. Their father is being interviewed by a French television crew. The documentary that is dated in 1990 and is known as The Masters of Okinawa.

What does Kobudo mean?

This video is introduced by Nishiuchi Mikio Saiko-Shihan.
Shihan Nishiuchi lived in Okinawa and learned kobudo directly from the late Hanshi Shinpo Matayoshi, Juudan, Zen Okinawa Kobudo Renmei and from Kaicho Takashi Kinjo, kyuudan, Kokusai Okinawa Budo Renmei, both of Naha, Okinawa. Shihan Nishiuchi is a nanadan in Pang Gai Noon Ryu Karate-Do (Uechi Ryu) and obtained his degree from Kaicho Takashi Kinjo.
Shihan Nishiuchi has been training for 45 years. He was born and lived in Kochi City, Shikoku Island, Japan and came to the United States when he was 30 years old. Shihan Nishiuchi also practices Iaido, classical Japanese swordsmanship, and holds a certified Chuudan degree in Musojikiden Hasegawa Eishin Ryu Iaiheiho.

The origins of Okinawan karate and kobujutsu are still shrouded in mystery, but it is thought that Chinese martial arts were introduced and blended with indigenous Okinawan martial arts over several centuries, forming the foundation for the modern martial arts of karate and kobujutsu.
