I was privileged to visit Nanta Hama many times, several years ago when I taught at a small college near Naha. Yohen Aiko helped me to learn the wonderful song that captures the heart of Okinawa, “Bashofu.” I tried and tried, but the high notes crucified me. On my very last visit to Nanta Hama to say goodbye to so many good Okinawan friends, this graceful and gracious lady asked me to try one more time to sing Bashofu, on the very stage in this video. I took a deep breath as the jamisen and drums began, and then I was off and singing. And just this one time, I got it right. No falsetto no mistakes. And there, standing behind me with that gentle smile and a tear in her eye stood Yohen Aiko. I cried too. I miss it all so much — Washita Shima, Uchina. Thank You, Yohen Aiko. Thank you.
