Okinawan traditional folk music, “Tosen Dōi(1) or as some people call it “Toshin Dōi(2) is a fast paced celebration song where people dance with Okinawa’s most famous “Kachashii” and melody created with Sanshin三線.

(You probably seen often doing “Eisa” エイサーwhich is an Ancestoral Spirit Festival.

This festival takes place at the time that is known  as O-Bon throughout Japan and used to be celebrated on the 13th, 14th, and 15th days of the 7th lunar month. It is now held on August 13.

O-Bon is a Buddhist custom that originated in India and came to Japan through China. It is a celebration of the departed spirits of their ancestors. Well, there is more to it in the History of Eisa. (I will be talking about this topic next month.)

Here is meaning of

Tosen Dōi or (Toshin Dōi), ドーイ The China trade ship is coming!!”

[To] means “China”

(Way back when Okinawa was called Ryukyu Kingdom, We used (china) as the Chinese kanji character , today we use 中国(china) as the Japanese kanji character .)

In Japanese it’s pronounced とう[to u], and In English it’s pronounced ト-[tō]

[Se n] or [Shi n] is Ship

In Japanese it’s pronounced [se n] (1), and In Ryukyu language it’s pronounced [shi n] (2).
There are very different vowels in Ryukyu language and in Japanese.

There are 5 vowels in the Japanese language.
(a), (i), (u),(e),(o)

Ryukyu language has only 3 vowels.
(a), (i), (u)

Instead of the Japanese vowel (e) it changes to (i) in Ryukyu language, and instead of the Japanese vowel (o) it changes to (u) in Ryukyu language.

In Japanese vowels (a),  (i),  (u),                          (e),   (o)

Changing  vowels to                                         ↓       ↓

In Ryukyu language vowels (a),  (i),  (u),             (i), (u)

Ex. 空 手 [Kara te] is the Japanese pronunciation and [kara ti] is the Ryukyu language pronunciation.
It’s changing between vowels in Japanese (e) to (i) in Ryukyu language.

In Kanji character, in Hiragana character, in Japanese pronunciation, and  in Ryukyu language pronunciation
(cloud)                                  くも [ku mo]                                                                くむ[ku mu]
(water)                                  みず[mi zu]                                                                みじ[mi ji]

ドーイ [Dōi] means “Coming”

ドーイ[dō(oo)-i] is Ryukyuan, and 来たぞ [ki ta zo] in Japanese.

The Naha Port
